Client Critiques

Sam Clark utilizes up half the book ahead of he gets into the nitty-gritty of construction strategies. This truly IS a book about property Style as nicely as construction. As such, it really is an Great book for somebody who's beginning from scratch to create their own residence. The method is extremely methodical, treating mindsets and goals as elements of the design approach equal in importance to elevation drawings.
The illustrations bear distinct consideration. The (black and white) photographs are well composed, and have high contrast to clearly delineate the features that are supposed to be of interest. The line drawings are rather funky searching (in part for the reason that Clark appears not to personal a ruler), but nevertheless do a very decent job of illustrating what the text is talking about. This is the case for three causes: (1) they were made by the author, who knew Exactly what element of the text needed visual aids (2) their rulerless nature means that Clark can emphasize specific features rather than concentrate on strict scale drawings and (three) every single a single is sized independently to take up as a lot space as is necessary to depict the subject matter, with out worrying about "wasting" some page location. The finish outcome is that the text and illustrations fit together nicely to make a unified whole.
For a great deal more detail on the Constructing component of making a home, I'd advise "Do-It-Oneself HOUSEBUILDING" by George Nash. But because Nash's book doesn't come close to Clark's for clarity, I'd initial read Clark's book cover-to-cover. Then I'd maintain Sam Clark's book open to the exact same topic location so that you can step back and get a clear overview as you get confused in the particulars of the Nash book.

After offering our course in owner-building at Heartwood for over twenty years, we've discovered Sam Clark's book to be the ideal textbook. It's not just a carpentry book, not just a design book, not just an engineering book. It's the most concise but complete guide to all the systems and choices that go into a property and its creation. In this age of a super-heated economy and opulent excess in trophy houses, it's refreshing to discover a resource for constructing a certainly economical and liveable property.
